When Two Moons Pull: A Working Day at Tamwith Bay
Captain Ina Varo does not need the harbour display to tell her that the tide has turned. She hears it in the water knocking against the western piles and sees it in the mooring lines, which have begun to lean towards the mouth of Tamwith Bay.
Still, she checks the display before releasing her boat.
It is not yet dawn. One moon hangs pale above the bay while the other is slipping behind a bank of coastal cloud. Their combined pull has raised the water across the lowest landing steps, exactly as the tide table predicted. The wind forecast is less settled. A narrow front moving south from the interior may reach the coast before the crew returns.
“The moons tell us where the water wants to go,” Varo says. “The forecast tells us what might meet us on the way.”
Reading the Departure
Varo’s boat carries four people, two diving frames and a blue-hulled service droid designated M7-R. Its original lifting arms have been rebuilt for deck work: securing baskets, watching air lines and keeping a second count of every diver who enters or leaves the water.
The youngest crew member, Nemi Tal, is a clam-diver in her second season. Before boarding, she pauses at the harbour wall to compare the official tide height with a row of dark marks cut into the stone by earlier crews.
“My grandfather trusted those marks,” she says. “I trust them too. I also trust the pressure warning in my sleeve. There is no prize for choosing only one.”
That habit runs throughout the bay. Crews consult the planetary living weather network, but they also watch the angle of surface ripples, the flight of shore birds and the colour beneath the eastern clouds. Tamwith’s reports travel back through the same network, giving researchers and neighbouring crews observations that no distant sensor could make from the water’s edge.
Today the sources mostly agree. Visibility is clear, the first tide is strong but regular, and the unsettled wind remains hours away. Varo releases the line. M7-R folds its stabilising feet against the deck, and the boat moves beyond the harbour lamps.
Beneath the Divided Light
The clam beds lie in a sheltered reach where fresh water from inland channels meets the bay. By sunrise, the remaining moon is faint above a sky turning silver. The surface appears calm, but the two lunar cycles produce crossing currents below it. Divers learn to recognise where those currents press against the seabed and where they leave pockets of still water.
Tal descends with an experienced diver while Varo and M7-R tend their lines. The droid displays depth, air use and current speed, announcing each change in a low tone. Varo listens, then rests two fingers on Tal’s line.
The line carries information the display cannot: a brief vibration as the diver changes direction, a steady pull while she works, and a sharper movement when a basket is ready to rise. Varo answers with agreed tugs. Beside her, M7-R records the exchange and lifts the filled basket without disturbing the second line.
The harvest is deliberately selective. Undersized clams remain in place, and each crew works within rotating sections intended to give the beds time to recover. A deck scanner checks the baskets, but the final decision belongs to hands accustomed to judging shell growth and condition.
When Tal surfaces, she brings back less than the basket could hold.
“There were plenty below,” she says, pulling off her mask. “That does not mean all of them belonged to today.”
A Warning from Inland
Late in the morning, the forecast changes. Coastal instruments have detected a faster pressure fall, while observations relayed from inland suggest the front has crossed the hills earlier than expected.
The alert does not order the fleet home. It gives each captain a revised wind range and an estimated arrival window. Varo studies the water, checks the position of the other boats and decides against a final dive.
No storm breaks over the bay. The first gusts arrive as uneven bands that roughen one stretch of water while leaving another almost untouched. It is precisely the sort of small, local change that makes Raxian forecasting useful without making it infallible.
On the return journey, M7-R secures the baskets and adjusts its stance as the deck begins to roll. Tal sends a brief observation through the boat’s relay: stronger surface wind than forecast, clear visibility, short crossing waves near the outer marker. Within moments, the report is available to the harbour and to crews still deciding when to turn back.
Knowledge here does not flow in a single direction. The network warns the boat; the boat helps refine the warning.
The Bay Comes Ashore
By midday, the western landing is crowded. Porters move the catch into shaded crates, stallholders compare sizes and buyers call offers across the stone. M7-R carries the heaviest baskets to the inspection tables, then returns to help another crew whose older deck unit has developed a stiff wheel.
Varo’s catch is modest, but it is enough for the market and the cooperative kitchens supplied by the morning boats. Tal logs the section they worked and the clams they left behind. Those records will help the crews decide when to return, alongside direct inspections of the beds.
As the afternoon trade eases, M7-R receives a different attachment from a locker near the quay: a compact rhythm plate, polished smooth by years of use. Maritime droids have become part of Tamwith Bay’s sea-shanty tradition, one coastal expression of Raxus’ wider creative partnership between droids and organics.
The performance begins informally. A porter starts an old hauling verse while stacking the final empty crates. Two fishers answer from the steps. M7-R taps out the working rhythm once used to coordinate lines and capstans, its precise beat softened by the uneven voices around it.
Tal joins only after Varo does.
Above them, the moons are absent from the daylight sky, but their influence remains in the falling water, the damp marks on the harbour wall and tomorrow’s departure board. Tamwith Bay does not treat that pull as a command. Nor does it imagine that sensors, relays or droids have made the coast predictable.
The bay’s confidence comes from something quieter: knowing which signs to read, which tools to question and when to leave part of the harvest beneath the divided light.
