That judgement has environmental value. Every restored motor, resealed pump and rebuilt droid wheel delays the energy and freight required for a replacement. It also has economic value on a world where independent traders, households and small farms cannot treat every breakdown as permission to buy again.
Most of all, the workshops preserve a kind of local independence. Their work makes communities less vulnerable to delayed shipments and discontinued parts. It keeps practical knowledge distributed among people who understand the machinery around them, rather than locked inside distant supply chains.
Back in Old Port, Orrin replaces one worn tooth on the market heater’s timing wheel, cleans the housing and listens again. The uneven tick settles into a quiet, regular rhythm. By evening, the heater will be back beneath its owner’s awning, ready for another season of cold mornings.
